Mexico/CA bus travel

I am planning trip from central IN to Panama. I have traveled to Panama many times but have always flown either to Panama City or San Jose CR and from SJO taken the bus to my final destination in Panama. Does any one have any experience in traveling from TX thru Mexico via bus? ie. cost, time and any helpful hints. Also, if any one has traveled by bus from the Mexican border to San Jose CR I would be interested in the same info. cost/time and helpful hints.
